 Sangiran Archaeological Monument

 

  One of the interesting tourist objects in Sragen Regency is the Sangiran Museum which is located in the Sangiran Dome area. The dome is located in the Solo Depression, at the foot of Mount Lawu (approximately 17 km from Solo City).

 Excavations by von Koenigswald's team ended in 1941 and the collections were partially kept in a building he founded with Toto Marsono in Sangiran, which later became the Sangiran Archaeological Museum, but important collections were sent to his friend in Germany, Franz Weidenreich.

A humble museum existed in Sangiran for decades before it was modern, which functioned well as a museum and visitor center opened in December 2011. The new building, a modern museum, contains three main rooms with extensive displays and impressive dioramas of the Sangiran area it is believed to be around. 1 million years ago. Several other centers are under construction as well (early 2013), so by 2014 it is expected that there will be four centers in different places within the entire Sangiran site.

 The presence of Sangiran is an example of a picture of past human life because this site is the most complete ancient human fossil site in Java. It covers 56 km2 covering three sub-districts in Sragen Regency, namely Gemolong, Kalijambe, and Plupuh Districts, and one sub-district in Karanganyar Regency, namely Gondangrejo District.

Sangiran is the most important site for the development of various fields of science, especially for research in the fields of anthropology, archeology, biology, paleoanthropology, geology, and of course for the tourism sector. The existence of Sangiran Site is very useful for studying prehistoric human life because this site is equipped with ancient human fossils, ancient human cultural results, fossils of ancient flora and fauna along with their stratigraphic descriptions.

Sangiran is passed by a very beautiful river, namely Kali Cemoro which empties into Bengawan Solo. This area is experiencing soil erosion so that the layers of soil that are formed are clearly different from one soil layer to another. It is in these soil layers that until now many fossils of humans and ancient animals have been found.

Some ancient human fossils are stored at the Geology Museum, Bandung, and the Paleoanthropology Laboratory, Yogyakarta. Judging from the findings, the Sangiran Site is a prehistoric site that has a very important role in understanding the process of human evolution and is the most complete archaeological site in Asia and even in the world.

  Entrance tickets to the Sangiran Museum are relatively cheap, as of April 4, 2019, every visitor is charged an entrance fee of IDR 8,000.00 (not including parking fees of IDR 2,000.00 per motorbike). And for foreign tourists, an entrance fee of IDR 14,500.00 is charged for each visitor. In accordance with PERDA No.2 of 2011 Sragen Regency
